The Untrodden Path
There’s something about a new year that’s always appealed to the dreamer in me. It’s an unexplored path filled with possibilities, and I can hardly wait to see where it leads. To borrow the words of my favorite fictional character, Anne Shirley, there’s a “bend in the road.”
Anne says, “It has a fascination of its own, that bend, Marilla. I wonder how the road beyond it goes — what there is of green glory and soft, checkered light and shadows — what new landscapes — what new beauties — what curves and hills and valleys further on.” (From Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery)
On the other hand, I’m sometimes frustrated by the unknown. It’s hard to count on a pleasant journey when I can’t see where the path is leading. Fortunately, there’s one thing that is certain: all of God’s paths are graced with lovingkindness and truth. In fact, He Himself is lovingkindness and truth.
I marvel that God’s scale is perfectly balanced, equal parts kindness and truth, mercy and justice. If we follow Him, ours should be too — “Do not let kindness and truth leave you; bind them around your neck, write them on the tablet of your heart. So you will find favor and good repute in the sight of God and man.” (Proverbs 3:3,4 NASB)
If we stick close to Him, cling tightly to the truth and treat the people around us with kindness, we’re starting down the right path — whether the year brings soft, checkered light or shadows.
All the paths of the Lord are lovingkindness and truth
to those who keep His covenant and His testimonies.
